Dubrovnik - Croatia

Thursday September 14th, 21st & 28th
05:00 - 22:00
Currency : Croation Kuna - £1 ≠10 Kuna

TIPS!

  • The KUNA is the official currency and although Croatia entered the European Union in July 2013, the country has not adopted the Euro - therefore, be aware that OFFICIALLY it is illegal for businesses to accept payments in currencies other than Kuna. However it is widely reported many establishments do accept the Euro

  • 1 Kuna (1HRK) = £0.12

  • The port is a long 45 minute walk into the city centre. Possibly too long and too much time.
It is mostly uphill and not a particularly scenic walk passing through residential appartments and industrial units

  • If the Spirit docks under the Franjo Tuđman bridge, it is quite a walk just to the exit to the port!

  • Sometimes there are as many as 4 cruise ships in at one time in the port of Dubrovnik, so if this happens you can expect crowds!

  • You can take a boat from the far end of the dock into Dubrovnik, which has great views

  • There is a bus service running from just outside the port to the centre and its cheap 1.5 Kuna - 10 minute ride but it may be very crowded! A taxi might be better! 10 Kuna for 4 people, make sure you agree on a price.

  • You can walk (200 meters) to the Main Bus Station where buses 1, 1a, 1b, 3 and 8 will take you to Brsalje Square right by the Pile Gate, which is the main entrance to the Old Town

  • There is also a similar bus service (No 8 bus) which drops off near the cable car

  • Buses ONLY accept Kuna as does the Cable car, entrance to the city walls (and public toilets)

  • Buy bus tickets beforehand at the small kiosk by the gates - you cannot buy tickets on the buses themselves. Buy return tickets for
    HRK4.00 - about £1.00

  • Taxis and Bars do normally accept Euros - Taxis cost €13.00 per car to the old town one way

  • Tipping is not expected in Croatia but a 'please keep the change' gesture will be very much appreciated. Sometimes bills are rounded up to the nearest HRK10.00

  • It is recommended by some to have at least £25.00 worth Kuna each, per day in Dubronik. Smaller denominations are more useful

  • If we do the cable car ride, (10 Kuna per person) we need to get there very early - probably first thing in the morning

  • Thomson do a cable car excursion which is a lot more expensive but avoids the queues

  • When you return from cable car you head down to old town then go through the harbour wall to the water and small port in Dubrovnik it is beautiful. Just before it there is a little museum / room displaying information about the war in 1992 including photographs of all the fallen soldiers worth a look and free

  • You can exchange Euros for Kuna in Dubrovnik and I am told you get a better rate than doing a currency exchange for them in UK, but we might get some in UK anyway if we are to use buses if we want to jump straight onto a bus from the Port

  • The taxi rank is 500 yds turning right as you leave the dockyard if we want to use the taxis

  • There is a lovely restaurant opposite the cruise ship terminal with great views. Its called Orsan which we might consider on our full day in Dubrovnik - although of course all our food is already found for us on the Spirit,  but unlike the Celebration, there are no extra fancy restaurants on the Spirit - remember Kora La and Mistral's?

We have taken a boat from the far end of the dock into Dubrovnik, which has great views, but mostly get a taxi the bus we found crowded. If you dock under the bridge it is a bit of a walk

Or catch the no.8 bus which will drop you right st the cable car approx 10 minutes from port gates did it in June easy and cheaper than taxis get your bus ticket at the office in the bus station get return ticket

We did the same. Taxi was 10 kuna as there were 4 of us. we got the bus back it was 1.5 kuna. Cable car was about 10 kuna. Fantastic views from the top. When you return from cable car you head down to old town then go through the harbour wall to the water and small port in dubrovnik it is beautiful. Just before it there is a little museum / room displaying information about the war in 1992 including photographs of all the fallen soldiers worth a look and free
