Unfortunately Cluster, although absolutely musically brilliant, had a life of only a few months, then Rod, Jimmy and John left. Paul Jones had only sung with us a few times anyway and so the basic residue, being Dave Knowles, Nigel Reveller, Derek Perris and me, formed the Dave Knowles Band.

Although we only ever played at one venue (being The Henwick Country club at Thatcham near Newbury) we enjoyed a cult following and people would flock into the Henwick every Thursday night to see our latest antics.

Dave and Nigel were renown for their practical jokes and I suddenly found myself involved in various daft skits and sketches on stage, such as the
tea-break-in-the-middle-of -a-song skit, the take-a-bath-on-stage skit, the watch-me-swing-on-the-rope-while-singing-a-ballad skit and
(dare I say it) watch-me-light-a-fart-in-front-of-the-audience skit!

I had never laughed so much then or since!

Around this time I had a call from Doug Buller of The Chordets (a Reading based functions band that I had heard a lot about in the past). Doug was looking for a guitarist for that evening and as a permanent member. I went along that night to play with the guys at Bracknell Sports Centre and I suddenly found myself in 2 bands! The Dave Knowles and and The Chordets!

The Chordets

Jimmy Shack (trumpet), Albert Hinton (baritone sax), Trevor Holloway (trumpet), Doug Buller (tenor sax), John Skates (drums), me, Pete Howard (bass), and 'Scab' Rackley (organ)

The Chordets had regular work and were always out gigging on top gigs. Most of the guys were excellent sight-readers and I could use my musical arrangment skills to provide great parts for the band to play. The year was 1977 and I was about to get married to Gillie. Being in two bands at the same time was really very hard, especially when two gigs came in for the same day. Reluctantly I said goodbye to The Dave Knowles Band and concentrated on The Chordets where all of the work was. Paul Hirsch (ex Voyager and now keyboard player with Status Quo) took over from me and Dave's new band was renamed Turbo
